As you probably have heard, France is finally opening up again! There has been a 4 stage plan in place for France to begin lifting restrictions that were put in place because of COVID-19. In general, France has been in a much stricter lockdown than Americans have seen. But finally, after 200 days, France is going to enter the last stage of easing limitations for the French. For those who are planning to go for a French getaway after the country is finally open, I have compiled a list of my 10 favorite must-see cities in the South of France.
The South of France has some of the most gorgeous sparkling shorelines, hilltop towns, and lavender countryside fields. They have beautiful oceanic views in places like Antibes, Cannes, and St Tropez. Here are a few of my favorites that I am adding to my bucket list. Check these spots out!
1. Nice
Nice is one of France’s largest cities, with lots of hustle-bustle. You could spend weeks here and never be satisfied! It is located along the French Riviera, with gorgeous seaside walkways. The famous painter, Henri Matisse spent a lot of time in Nice and is honored with a large collection of paintings at Musée Matisse. It is perfect for those art lovers!
2. Aix-en-Provence
Aix-en-Provence has such a beautiful charm to the city. It has beautiful stucco pastel buildings that you have to see! They also are known for their amazing fountains that are scattered around the city.

3. Avignon
Avignon is set on the Rhône River and is such a historic location. It is an old city with stunning medieval Gothic architecture. Places such as Pont Saint-Bénézet and Palais des Papes are must sees.
4. Menton
Menton is a beautiful coastal town with layers of pastel-colored homes overlooking the Mediterranean bay. It is known for its white-sand beaches and lush gardens. Taking a boat is recommend so you can fully enjoy the colorful homes and buildings.
5. Antibes
Antibes is a resort town between Cannes and Nice on the French Riviera. It has some of the bluest water and whitest sand and is perfect for a relaxing beach day. Fun Fact, even Picasso lived there for six months in the 1940s!

6. Arles
Arles is another colorful town that has the most charming architecture. It also has super interesting sites to see such as a strikingly well-preserved Roman amphitheater and Place du Forum. The amphitheater was created in about 90 AD! If you are a history buff, Arles is for you!
7. Cannes
What kind of list would this be if I did not include Cannes! Famous for the international film festival named after the city, Cannes is an amazing place to visit. Canes is a coastal resort town lined with sandy beaches, upscale boutiques, and splendid hotels. It’s perfect for everyone, not just film junkies.
8. Juan-les-Pins
Juan-les-Pins is less touristy than other places such as Cannes and Antibes, but it has similar beaches and resort locations. There are so many yummy restaurants on the seafront promenade!
9. Grasse
Grasse is special because it is the perfume capital of the world. Fragonard, Molinard, and Galimard offer tours of their perfumeries, perfect for any visitors! You can also visit the huge fields of flowers right outside of the city. I can’t wait to go to Grasse and come back with soaps, body sprays, and eaux de toilette from the heart of Provence!
10. Monaco
I know I know, you’re probably thinking that Monaco is technically not even a part of France! But, I love Monaco and if we are getting specific, it is physically located in the south of France. It is a microstate on the French Riviera, extremely close to Italy. If you have not been yet you need to put it on your list!
Honestly, every city in France has something super unique and beautiful about it. Whatever you are interested in (history, perfume, architecture, etc) you will find amazing sites to see there! Here is another one of my favorite places for amazing beaches in the South of France! Did I miss any of your favorite Southern cities in France?
