Every single one of us has a coffee preference, and you don’t want cultural differences, or a language barrier to keep you from your daily dose of caffeine. Here is how to order coffee in France!

Café

Like in Italian, the word café translates to coffee in French. This is the most commonly ordered type of coffee in a French café and all you’ll get a shot of espresso in a tiny cup. This is a great way to start your morning or end your delicious meal!

Noisette

Une noisette is the French equivalent of the Italian macchiato. It is a shot of espresso with a drop or two of milk or cream. It gets its name from the translation, “hazelnut coffee”, which refers to the coffee becoming the color of hazelnuts once milk is added.

Café Americain

Americans may struggle when ordering in coffee in France, but if you like traditional coffee that you are used to drinking at home, order a café americain. It is filtered coffee and named because it is the closest to the type of coffee we Americans would brew in a coffee pot.

Café Crème

If you like a cappuccino, this is exactly what you need to order. Cappuccino is an Italian word, so you will instantly look like a tourist if you enter a French café and order that. It is an espresso topped off with a lot of milky foam and is a perfect day-time coffee.

Un Déca

Un Déca or Un café décafféiné is decaffeinated coffee. You can order coffee in France with this version of espresso, or you can add milk or cream. This is commonly enjoyed by the French after a long delicious meal!
