Halloween is quickly approaching and it’s about to get real spooky! While Halloween might not be the biggest holiday celebrated in France, it is still home to some of the most haunted castles in the world. Castles, churches, parks, cemeteries and houses on the countryside are said to be haunted by many victims of France’s long and bloody history. Read below to find out five of France’s most haunted castles.
1. The White Lady
Where? Aquitaine
Le Chateau de Puymartin located in Aquitaine is said to be home to “La Dame Blanche” (“The White Lady”) who appears running across the North Tower of the chateau. The story goes that Thérèse de Saint-Clar died after being locked in a miniature room in the chateau’s tower in the 16th century by her husband who believed she was having an affair.
2. The Beheaded
Where? Outside of Paris
Versailles, France’s most well known chateau is said to be haunted by the ghosts of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette who were both guillotined during the French Revolution.
3. The Departed Soldiers
Where? Loire Valley
While the Chateau de Chambord might look magnificent on the outside, its inside is haunted by a frightening history full of war and death as it served as a hospital during the Franco-Prussian War. Today, the chateau is said to be haunted by the ghosts of dead soldiers who wander around the castle.
4. The Double Murder
Where? Loire Valley
The Chateau de Brissac is France’s tallest castle, however, it is also the setting of a horrifying double murder. Jacques de Brézé found his wife with another man and in a rage murdered them both. The story goes that the dead couple still haunt the chateau today.
5. The War Victims
Where? Outside Bordeaux
In the center of Semillon and Sauvignon blanc wine country, this chateau is said to be haunted by the ghosts of WWII when the Germans occupied the castle. Today, people insist they hear voices yelling “fight” and see ghosts of soldiers past running throughout the halls of the castle.
