French Books and Films to Enjoy in Quarantine
The implications of a global pandemic are very real and extremely tough on many people. In order to do our part to end this quarantine time quickly for everyone, we must do our part by staying inside, working from home, and making do with the resources that are already readily available to us. That doesn’t mean that fun is off the table though! Now that we are all spending so much time at home, why not enrich your life with literature and media? We have curated a list of French books, films, and shows for you to enjoy while social distancing that can virtually transport you to the idyllic countryside of Provence or the café lined streets of Paris. So slip on something comfy, (check out our La Marinière Française Rene lounge wear collection) and let yourself fall into one of these books or films.
French Books
Nightingale by Kristin Hannah
Get comfortable with this bestselling novel as you dive into a story of war, love, and family. Set in France during World War II, Hannah’s story leads the reader through a dangerous war-stricken country, occupied by Germany, while honing in on the personal story of two estranged sisters struggling to survive the war and separation from their loved ones. For history buffs with a soft spot for romance and drama, this is the novel for you!
The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George
Nina George’s contemporary adult fiction novel contains aspects of magical realism, medicine and romance all while floating along the Siene. The book’s protagonist, Monsieur Perdu, a self-professed literary apothecary, prescribes books to his customers based on his intuition for what their soul needs at that moment. With the internal conflict of being able to satisfy everyone with his book recommendations except himself, follow Perdu on a journey to go after the love of his life and find yourself soothed by the warmth and beautiful imagery this book exudes.
French Films & Shows
French Toast
A juicy drama that includes a secretive French toast recipe, this film has elements of mystery, romance, and suspense. A young woman living in South Africa finds the diary of her late mother only to discover she has a secret sibling living in France. Embarking on a journey of confusion, love, and the desire for closure, enjoy this movie for a feel-good Hallmark-esque film whenever you need a smile. Find it on Netflix.
Chocolat
Indulge in the sweet joy that is Chocolat. Follow a nomadic mother-daughter duo who open a chocolate shop in rural France, uprooting the whole town with their delicious sweets and kindheartedness. This film has its humorous moments, surrounded by suspenseful drama and a sweet mother-daughter relationship. If that isn’t enticing enough, there’s also a Johnny Depp romance in the film, so head over to Hulu or Amazon Prime to check it out.
Vampires
A Netflix original, sink your teeth into this mythical drama series about a Paris teen that happens to be half vampire, half human. Born into a family of vampires, the drama in this show is insane. Tune in to see how this teen deals with struggles that already come with youth while mixing in her strict family and mystical secret.
